The TMJ is commonly involved in Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) which is
made up of symptoms involving the jaw, facial muscles, ears, teeth, and neck. In
most cases the primary cause is pain in the muscles that control the jaw. In some
cases, there can be an internal derangement of the joint due to a displaced disc,
condyle injury, or sometimes a dislocated jaw.
The TMJ is important because it is involved in important daily activities such as
eating, drinking, and speech. TMD usually develops due to trauma, poor
biomechanics, and overuse. TMD commonly involves loss of motion, muscle
tightness or spasm, and inflammation of the involved tissues. It can cause
headaches, dizziness, ringing in the ears, neck pain, and inability to open/close
mouth. At Experience Physical Therapy we can help resolve TMD and get you
back to work, recreation, or family and living your best life.
